BMP Forebay Silt Removal and Regrading in Poquoson

When a BMP forebay fills up with silt, it stops doing its job. That's exactly what happened here in Poquoson. Years of sediment buildup had packed the forebay to the point where it couldn't hold the proper volume of water anymore. At that point, the whole system is compromised - and downstream water quality pays the price.

The fix wasn't as simple as sending in a standard machine. The saturated, soft conditions and the scale of the silt accumulation meant we needed a long-reach excavator to get the job done right. That extra reach is what lets us work from stable ground while still pulling material from the deepest parts of the basin - no shortcuts, no guessing.

We excavated and exported the accumulated silt to bring the forebay back to its designed grade. Once the forebay was back in shape, we moved straight into stabilizing all the disturbed areas. That step matters just as much as the dig itself - leaving bare ground unaddressed invites erosion right back into the basin you just cleaned out.

BMPs like this one serve entire neighborhoods. When they're functioning properly, they're filtering runoff and protecting local waterways. When they're silted in, that protection disappears. This is the kind of maintenance work that often goes unnoticed until problems get serious - and by then, the fix is always more involved than it needs to be.
