Erosion doesn't stay put. It keeps moving, taking more soil with every rain until you've got deep channels cutting through your yard and nothing left to work with. That's exactly what this Richmond homeowner was dealing with - a badly eroded backyard slope that had gotten way out of hand.

Here's what we were working with: a steep, heavily wooded slope with a serious erosion channel running through it. The existing tree cover wasn't helping - root competition, canopy runoff, and years of unchecked water flow had eaten away at the soil. Before we could fix anything, we had to remove several trees that were contributing to the problem and getting in the way of a proper regrade.

Once the trees were out, we brought in fill and topsoil to build the slope back up and regrade it so water moves the way it should. Getting the grade right is everything on a job like this. If the slope doesn't drain correctly, you're just setting the yard up to fail again. We took our time with it.

After the regrade was done, we laid erosion control blankets across the slope. These hold the topsoil and seed in place while the ground gets established - critical on a slope this steep. Without them, the first good rain washes your work right back downhill. With them, the soil stays put and grass has a real chance to take root.

End result is a slope that's stable, properly graded, and protected against future washout. This kind of work isn't glamorous, but it's one of those jobs that saves homeowners from a much bigger and more expensive problem down the road.
